Facing and Mastering Your Negative Emotions

Confronting Negative Emotions to Build Intimacy in Marriage

Navigating the complex landscape of emotions can be a significant challenge for many men, especially when it comes to their most important relationships. On this episode of the Real Men Connect podcast, Dr. Greg Stewart, a counselor, coach, and author, offers invaluable insights on how men can effectively confront their negative emotions and use that process to deepen intimacy in their marriages.

Dr. Stewart brings a wealth of personal and professional experience to this conversation. As a former pastor who also struggled with an emotional affair, he understands firsthand the difficulties men face in addressing their inner turmoil. However, through his own journey of healing and growth, he has developed a framework called "I-Cubed" that empowers men to identify, interpret, and manage their negative emotions in a healthy, productive way.

In this episode, Dr. Stewart unpacks the gender differences in how men and women approach emotions, explaining the unique emotional goals that often drive conflict in marriages. He provides practical strategies for men to increase self-awareness, overcome insecurities, and build the emotional intimacy their wives deeply desire.

Whether you're a husband seeking to strengthen your marriage or a man simply wanting to better understand and express your emotions, this conversation offers invaluable wisdom that can transform your relationships and your life. Prepare to be challenged, encouraged, and equipped to become the emotionally mature man God has called you to be.

Facing and Mastering Your Negative Emotions (EP:935)

Three Key Highlights:

  1. The importance of understanding your emotional goals and how they drive your behavior. Dr. Stewart explains how men's primary emotional goals are significance, success, and respect, while women's are security and safety. Recognizing these underlying emotional drivers can help couples better understand and address the root causes of conflict.

  2. The value of self-awareness and taking responsibility for your own emotions. Dr. Stewart emphasizes the need to look inward and examine what insecurities, fears, or past traumas are being exposed when you experience negative emotions, rather than just blaming external circumstances or your spouse. Developing a strategy to address these internal issues is key.

  3. The transformative power of vulnerability and transparency. Dr. Stewart shares how his own journey of facing and overcoming his emotional struggles, including an emotional affair, has enabled him to speak with authenticity and authority on these topics. He encourages men to be willing to expose their weaknesses in order to find true healing and growth.
