10 Christian Marriage Books Every Couple Should Read Together

Christian Marriage Books Worth Reading

Almost anyone and their grandmother can recommend a good book to read if you’re a Christian and you’re married. However, very few can recommend books that they’ve actually finished AND books that they’ve actually met the author as well. That’s why I wanted to create a not-so-unique reading list of 10 Christian marriage books for couples.

Admittedly, I’ve only interviewed half the authors on this list on my podcast called Real Men Connect with Dr. Joe, but that’s probably five more authors than 90% of the recommended reading lists you’ll usually find; I’m just saying.

But seriously, for Christian couples, cultivating a thriving marriage requires commitment, communication, and a shared spiritual foundation. And while the Bible will always be the ultimate guide to marriage and life, books like these can provide valuable insights and practical advice to help you grow even closer to each other and closer to God.

Christian marriage books for couples

Here are 10 Christian marriage books that I believe every couple should consider reading together (in no particular order):

1. "The Meaning of Marriage" by Timothy Keller

In "The Meaning of Marriage," Timothy Keller, along with his wife Kathy, offers profound insights into the purpose and beauty of marriage from a biblical perspective. Keller addresses cultural misconceptions about marriage and provides a theological framework based on Ephesians 5. The book emphasizes sacrificial love, mutual respect, and how marriage mirrors the gospel. With practical advice on topics like forgiveness, conflict resolution, and intimacy, "The Meaning of Marriage" is a must-read for couples who want to understand the deeper spiritual purpose of their union.

2. "Sacred Marriage" by Gary Thomas

Gary Thomas challenges the conventional view of marriage in "Sacred Marriage" by asking, "What if God designed marriage to make us holy more than to make us happy?" The book encourages couples to see their marriage as a tool for spiritual growth and character development. Through stories, biblical teachings, and practical advice, Thomas helps readers view the trials and joys of marriage as opportunities to grow closer to God. "Sacred Marriage" is ideal for couples who are seeking a deeper understanding of how their relationship can be a path to spiritual maturity.

3. "Love & Respect" by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

Dr. Emerson Eggerichs' "Love & Respect" addresses one of the primary needs in marriage: a husband’s need for respect and a wife’s need for love. Based on Ephesians 5:33, the book explains the “Crazy Cycle” that couples often get stuck in when these needs are unmet. Eggerichs provides a simple yet profound strategy for breaking the cycle and cultivating a marriage where both partners feel valued and understood. This book is especially helpful for couples struggling with communication issues and misunderstandings.

4. "The Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman

In "The Five Love Languages," Gary introduces a concept that has helped countless couples improve their relationships. The book explains that everyone has a preferred way of giving and receiving love—whether it be words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, or physical touch. Understanding each other's love language can help couples express love in ways that are meaningful to their spouse. Chapman's insights make this book practical and applicable for any couple, whether newlyweds or seasoned partners.

Christian Marriage Books Worth Reading

5. "You and Me Forever: Marriage in Light of Eternity" by Francis and Lisa Chan

Francis and Lisa Chan take a different approach to marriage in "You and Me Forever," focusing on living with eternity in mind. The authors emphasize that while marriage is important, it is not the ultimate goal—serving God together is. This perspective shifts the focus from fulfilling personal needs to working as a team to advance God's Kingdom. The book includes real-life stories and practical advice, making it a valuable read for couples who want to live purposefully and grow spiritually together.

6. "The Love Dare" by Stephen and Alex Kendrick

"The Love Dare," made popular by the movie Fireproof, is a 40-day journey that challenges couples to understand and practice unconditional love. Each day presents a new "dare" or task designed to strengthen the bond between spouses and bring healing to the marriage. With biblical principles guiding the exercises, the book encourages couples to go beyond surface-level affection and engage in intentional acts of love and kindness. "The Love Dare" is perfect for couples looking for a hands-on approach to building a Christ-centered marriage.

7. "Boundaries in Marriage" by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend

Setting healthy boundaries is crucial for any relationship, including marriage. In "Boundaries in Marriage," Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend offer practical advice on how to establish boundaries that protect the emotional and spiritual health of both partners. The book discusses how to say "no" to harmful behaviors, respect each other's individuality, and cultivate a marriage where love and freedom coexist. This book is particularly helpful for couples who struggle with issues like codependency, control, or unhealthy conflict.

8. "Intended for Pleasure" by Ed Wheat, MD, and Gaye Wheat

"Intended for Pleasure" is a comprehensive guide to sexual intimacy in marriage from a Christian perspective. Written by a physician and his wife, the book covers the emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of intimacy. It addresses common concerns, offers medical advice, and provides practical tips for enhancing marital intimacy in a way that honors God. This book is particularly valuable for newlyweds or couples who want to deepen their sexual relationship while keeping their faith at the center.

9. "Sheet Music" by Dr. Kevin Leman

Another book on marital intimacy, "Sheet Music" by Dr. Kevin Leman, offers a candid and biblically-based guide to enjoying a fulfilling sex life within marriage. Leman discusses intimacy openly and practically, helping couples to overcome common barriers and misunderstandings about sex. With humor and sensitivity, he addresses the differences between men and women and provides insights that can help couples experience a more joyful and connected relationship. "Sheet Music" is recommended for couples who desire to strengthen the physical aspect of their marriage.

10. "Marriage on the Rock" by Jimmy Evans

In "Marriage on the Rock," Jimmy Evans lays out the principles that have helped him and his wife build a strong marriage after facing their own struggles. The book covers essential topics such as communication, finances, intimacy, and conflict resolution. Evans also highlights the importance of prioritizing God as the foundation of the marriage. With practical advice and biblical wisdom, "Marriage on the Rock" is a solid resource for couples who want to build a marriage that can withstand life's challenges.
